Amangalla, Galle, Sri Lanka

 

Nestled within the Dutch Fort in Galle which is famous as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Amangalla is housed in a historic colonial building which was formerly known as the New Oriental Hotel. Offering bedrooms, chambers, suites and a garden house, the resort reflects the by gone era magnificently with its unique colonial settings and antique furniture. From Spa facilities to warm meals the resort provides a tranquil atmosphere where guests can relax and even meditate without any disturbance from the bustling city of Galle.

Amangalla Location

Amangalla is situated 120km south of Colombo within the walls of the famous Dutch Fort in the historical city of Galle. The Bandaranaike International Airport is located about 30km North of Colombo. The drive to Colombo from the airport is about 1 hour while the transfer from the airport to Amangalla Resort takes about 4 hours. For your convenience there are Air Taxi services organized by the airport or even scheduled helicopter rides daily. These transfers will be made upon request.

Amangalla Accommodation

The 29 bedrooms, chambers and suites at Amangalla offer a variety of views from the Galle Fort to the hotel's gardens.

Bedrooms - Seven bedrooms are located next to the reception area of the resort on the ground level with views of the garden and the great church. Bedroom features include a twin or king-size four-poster bed, writing desk, dining table, pettagama chest which are set within the original polished jack-wood floors. The spacious bathroom offers twin vanities, free-standing bathtub, a separate shower and toilet. There are also three bedrooms set within the property’s gardens. French windows and doors open onto the garden entrance of each room. The bedrooms offer a combined sitting and sleeping area but are otherwise similar to the those located adjacent to Amangalla's reception.

Chambers - The resort has six chambers that face the Fort walls with the entrance leading into the open plan room, featuring the bathroom, followed by the bedroom and a separate sitting area. The bathroom includes a large shower, free-standing bathtub, and toilet. Amenities include a four-poster king-size or twin bed arrangement, a planter’s chair, writing desk, dining table and a pettagama chest perched on gleaming teak floorboards. The four Garden Wing Chambers, three with balconies and one with a twin porch – all over-look the treetops of the resort garden. The large rooms feature the same furnishings as the chambers facing the fort ruins while these have the addition of either antiques or replicas with highly polished timber floorboards and the shuttered windows on the balcony or porch.

Suites - The eight suites look onto either para-rubber trees, the fort and harbour or the tropical gardens of the property. These spacious suites feature original polished teak floorboards dating back over 300 years. The entry hall leads to a separate bedroom and lounge area while adjoining the hall is the bathroom with a free-standing bathtub, twin vanities, separate toilet and shower. The bedroom has a twin or king-size four-poster bed and arched, shuttered windows. The lounge is furnished with a chaise lounge, writing desk, dining table, planter’s chair and pettagama chest.

The Garden House - Situated within the resort gardens, this two-storey house features a private terrace and balcony offering treetop views. The original, antique furniture of the house has been restored while at the entrance is a sitting room fitted with a chaise longue, armchairs and coffee table. With double doors leading to the bedroom, it is furnished with a king-size four-poster bed, writing table and dressing cabinet. Adjacent is a spacious bathroom, offering twin vanities, a free-standing bathtub, toilet and separate shower. An internal stairway rises from the sitting room to the upper level, which features a daybed and banquette. Other facilities include a pantry serviced by a private butler.

Amangalla Facilities

The Great Hall which was referred to as the "Zaal" in Dutch times is the entry point to Amangalla Resort providing guests the colonial feel with chandeliers, overhead fans and high ceilings. Guests can relax in the veranda which faces the tree lined street. The menu consists of light snacks in the morning and afternoon tea which is served daily. The Dining room provides a very intimate setting with a colonial touch. Furnished with period tables and chairs, antique silverware and crisp white linen, the dining room serves guests breakfast, lunch and dinner with a choice of traditional Sri Lankan curry and home cooked dishes.

The Spa known as "The Baths" at consists of five treatment chambers which is through an arched hallway. Gentlemen's and Ladies' dressing rooms lead to a hall containing a sauna, steam room and hydrotherapy pools with jet massage to stimulate the entire body. With tall ceilings and traditional archways, the hydrotherapy area is indeed an experience in ancient indulgences.

The traditions of the past continue in the Barber Shop and Salon providing gentlemen's shaving, and manicures and pedicures sedately done from original planter's chairs overlooking the gardens. From the Massage to the Foot & Facial (a classic facial and pedicure combined) to Ayurvedic Massages, each treatment is conducted by therapists, whose unique nurturing and natural passion is at the heart of The Baths.

With a wide range of reference books on history, arts, culture and communities in Sri Lanka, as well as magazines, newspapers, novels , audio cd's and board games, the Library at Amangalla is an excellent place to research about the region. A desktop computer is available for internet access. The swimming pool is located within the gardens of Amangalla.

The pool courtyard contains five shaded rest pavilions which are known as ambalamas on one side with a number of sun loungers shaded by palm trees. Poolside service is provided and a variety of light meals and snacks are available. Also nestled in the gardens is a Meditation and Yoga Pavilion. Amangalla offers a complimentary babysitting service.

Amangalla Excursions

Amangalla being a part of the 400 year old Galle Fort offers guests the opportunity to explore the vicinity of this great monument. There are narrow streets lined with old houses displaying the Dutch heritage as well as government offices which some remain in use or in states of repair. You can spot bullock carts, food carts that contribute to the hustle of the daily lifestyles of the locals.

A leisurely walk leads past the Old Dutch Church, the Governor’s house, the spice warehouses, Court Square, the Kachcheri (town hall), the lighthouse and on to the sea wall and ramparts is an enjoyable way to experience the fort. There are many wonderful temples about twenty minutes' drive from the Fort. The 1,200 year old Yatagala Temple is one of the oldest in the region, and is set in a beautiful valley of rice paddies and jungle hills. You can also visit the low-lying tea country within 10 minutes away from Galle.
