Dunuvila, one of the King's Ministers, lived here with his extended family. Further up on the other side of the road, this place (owned by Tamil Catholics) has three spotless, bright rooms, all with hot water. The double upstairs has a balcony and attracts a higher price. There's a small garden and the hosts are very welcoming.

This is a basic guest house run by a family. Even though it is basic it's clean, comfortable and has all the essentials - mosquito nets, clean sheets, en-suite rooms and fans. The owner collected me at the station and for a little extra made me a big breakfast in the morning. It took me 5 minutes to reach the lake and maybe another 10 to get to the main temple area on foot. Don't expect luxury but wonderful people and a cheap stay for what you get.

The Knuckles National Heritage Wilderness Area is a 155 square KM region of spectacular peaks and one of the last remaining sizeable portions of wet zone forests in Sri Lanka. Boasting the most rugged and breathtaking mountain scenery in the Island it is located in the Dumbara Hills between the Kandy and Matale Districts of the central province. These hills are so named because of the constant "Smoky" (Dumbara) mist that engulfs their tops.

A continuous forested area is divided into two sections, a conservation area above 1050 m (3500 ft) and a forest reserve below.

Its boundaries encompass all five climatic types found in the island.This region was so named because the string of peaks including eight higher than 1500 m resembles the knuckles of a closed fist. A striking feature of the knuckles region is its scenic beauty.
