| Amanwella is a luxury retreat hidden away in a small coastal village in Tangalle which is dedicated to preserving its environment. Amanwella Location |
Amanwella is found nestled amongst a coconut grove, just above a tropical beach closer to the village of Tangalle which is in the Southern tip of the island. Tangalle is located about 195km away towards the South of Colombo while the International Airport in Katunayake is about 30km North of Colombo.
Daily scheduled helicopter transfers are available through Deccan Aviation. Sri Lankan airlines have also introduced daily Air Taxi services to the Koggala Lagoon. Guests can request for a Aman resorts representative to be met at the airport where he can escort you to Amanwella. |

Amanwella offers guests 30 identical suites which are of contemporary design with colours of beige, cream and honey and wood that are pleasing to the eye.
Suites - These suites enjoy different views of the ocean and the coconut grove and are situated mainly on the hillside. Two sides of the unit includes floor-to-ceiling glass and latticed panels while one opens onto a private walled-in entry courtyard and plunge pool with a terrace at the opposite side offering open views. The courtyard features a banquette for lounging and dining while timber sliding doors and panels reveal the interior spaces.
There is a combined sleeping and living room with a king-size bed, armchair with footstool, writing desk and a credenza featuring a personal bar with refreshments. Sliding screens divide this area from the open-plan bathroom that includes a free-standing bathtub, dressing area, twin vanities, shower and toilet. From here there is access to a spacious terrace via sliding doors. The terrace includes a dining table with two chairs and a double sun lounger. Three sets of suites share a connecting door on the terrace making it ideal for families or couples travelling as groups.
Ocean Suites - With uninterrupted views of the beach and coconut grove, these suites are situated on the lower levels of the hill. Most are free-standing, while four sets of suites share a connecting door on the terrace. These ocean suites are also ideal for families or couples travelling together. |
Amanwella Facilities |
Amanwella is a stylishly designed beachfront retreat where its architecture pays tribute to Sri Lanka’s renowned architect Geoffrey Bawa's creativity. The approach is a highlight of senses together with the combination of climate, landscape modern and ancient civilization. The restaurant at Amanwella is located within the cluster of public buildings which is towards the Southern end of the resort. Open all day, the restaurant is located 8 meters above sea level with stunning views.
Guests can enjoy Asian and Mediterranean cuisine with an emphasis on local sea food. The tables are scattered on two elevated levels while outdoor seating is available on another lower level. The Lounge area and bar is also adjacent to the restaurant where guests can enjoy drinks and snacks with exotic sundowners. Selections of cigars are also available till late evening.
The pool terrace is which is adjoining the swimming pool is the ideal place for outdoor dining. Simple lunches can be enjoyed during the day while during the evenings you can dine on appetizers and home-style dishes while relaxing on daybeds. The Beach Club which is closer to the beach front away from the main building provides an alternate venue for lunch and private dinners. The menu is of simple Asian salads, Mediterranean classics, granitas and freshly churned ice cream. Seafood is cooked over a coconut charcoal barbeque and served with garden fresh salads and local relishes.
Other facilities at Amanwella includes a library that offers a variety of reference books on the history, arts, culture and wildlife of Sri Lanka as well as a selection of novels, magazines, newspapers, audio CDs and board games. A desktop computer is also available for Internet access. The boutique offers a range of Sri Lankan artefacts, jewellery, textiles and antiques and also a variety of convenience items.
The outdoor swimming pool is an excellent place to enjoy a swim and laze around on the sun loungers. The Spa menu includes healing massages, traditional therapies, facials, and a choice of body treatments using natural ingredients from Sri Lanka's own herbs, plants and flowers. Treatments can be enjoyed in the Spa suite, in the privacy of your own suite or in selected garden locations. Amanwella also offers a complimentary babysitting service.

Amanwella Excursions |
Amanwella is found in the Wella Wathuara village in Tangalle where guests can enjoy evening walks along the village paths winding through the jungles and witnessing the village folklore. You can spot diverse wildlife which includes monitor lizards, hares, monkeys, birds, mouse deer and mongooses. The Mulgirigala Rock Temple is found approximately 35 minutes north of Tangalle and is a monastic site while the Bundala National Park which is about 1 1/2 hours away is a haven for bird lovers.
Other parks include the Yala National Park, Uda Walawe National Park and the Rekawa Turtle Conservation project.
The best time to spot blue whales off the coast of Sri Lanka is between December and April which is located 90 minutes away from Amanwella in the Mirissa Harbour. Guests can also swim and snorkel from the boat, watch for whales and dolphins, do a spot of fishing with a hand line and have a picnic in a coconut-fringed cove. For those who wish to stay at the resort, Amanwella's sandy beach is located in an 800m crescent-shaped cove fringed with palm trees. Snorkelling and swimming is possible during calm weather while complimentary snorkelling equipment is available.
