Kikili Beach Location

Kikili Beach is at Talpe (Thaple), a secluded village by the beach 122km south of Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. 2 km to the north of Talpe is the popular holiday resort, Unawatuna beach and further 5 km to the north is Galle. Sri Lanka's South Coast with coconut palm fringed beach stretches for miles to the north and south. The serene Koggala river and the cinnamon estates in the interior can be reached by a short walk or by three wheeler. Talpe (Thalpe) has a range of villas and boutique hotels but, nonetheless, offers some budget accommodation, too.

Talpe is one of the few places where the traditional, yet diminishing, stilt fishing still continues. At the chest high water off shore where the poles planted in the sea bed. Each pole is fixed with a wedge of wood making a toehold of a seat barely enough for one to sit precariously about a meter higher than the level of the water. Each pole is occupied by a fisherman with his line cast into the incoming waves hook small fish.

Reaching Kikili Beach
Vostors are able to reach Kikili Beach Talpe (Thalpe)by main southern motor road called Galle Road or by the southern Railway. However Talpe being a small fishing village having only a minor train station, not all trains stop therein. Of course, express trains running from Colombo to Matara do not stop at Talpe. Air Taxi from Colombo Int'l Airport at Katunayake, Negombo to Koggala is, indeed, the quickest way to reach Kikili Beach. A 15 minutes drive from Koggla takes the guests to Kikili Beach.

Kikili Beach Facilities

The lounge area at Kikili Beach opens out to a verandah and a garden. The verandah and garden affords the lovely views of beautiful palm fringed golden beach of Talpe (Thalpe). The traditional stilt fishermen can be seen perched of stilts in the beach angling for long hours.

Being devoid of regular restaurant, the dining is enjoyed in a thatched cabana in the garden with the sea breeze cutting in. Whenever the indoor dining is required, the small indoor kitchen serves the purpose satisfactorily. Al the dishes are prepared with fresh sea food, vegetables and fruits. The villa is staffed with a full time cook/house boy. The staff members are always at your service and ready to accompany the guests to the local fairs and markets in the town to purchase fresh seafood, fruit and vegetables.

Kikili Beach Excursions

Kikili Beach at Talpe is ideally located to make day excursions to the surrounding attractions without much hassle in transportation. Hikkaduwa, Galle and Koggala beaches are popular beach resorts. Kottawa Forest Reserve that affords another day excursion from Talpe (Thalpe) beach attracts the nature lovers.

Galle, home to the best preserved colonial fort of Sri Lanka-Galle Dutch Fort- a world heritage site can be reached in 15 minutes drive. Within the fort, set up on a peninsula, is a network of streets leading to numerous colonial buildings including Christian churches, museums, villas that would invite all the visitors for hours of exploration. Furthermore, Buddhist temple and an Islamic mosque within the fort exhibit the diversity of the close knit circle of inhabitants within the fort. Galle Dutch Fort, a World Heritage Site is a living colonial fort vibrant with activity. Over the fort to the land side is the Galle International stadium. Across the main road bordering the cricket stadium is the heart of the modern city of Galle.

Koggala that can be reached in a 15 minutes drive, is an enchanting village with a fine beach and lagoon. A boat ride in the lagoon rich in birdlife with its small islands, opens up the tropical nature and village life to the visitors. The Eagle Island of the Koggala lagoon is populated with hundreds of nesting eagles.
