Sri Lanka Calling gets new thrust

The Japanese language version of ?Sri Lanka Calling? will be in circulation from next week. A monthly issue, it will facilitate a direct communication with the Japanese travelling public and tour operators. This summarized version is the work of a Japanese national Ms. Mai Furukawa, a JICA volunteer resident in Sri Lanka and a staff team member of Sri Lanka Tourism. Thank you both! We appreciate your labour of love for our country.

Marcel Vissiers, chief editor Meetings Industry Magazine (MIM) and Head Quarters Magazine (HQM), will be touring Sri Lanka, along with renowned photographer Ronald Van Der Hilst, from December 29th to January 16th.

Based in Brussels, Vissiers, heads the Meeting Media Company: an award winning publishing house specialising in the meetings industry. Respected for his forthright and journalistic style of writing, Vissiers? work has been recognized globally. Sri Lanka features at Mediterranean and Middle Eastern Forum

Sri Lanka Tourism will be featured at the UN WTO supported Egyptian Travel Agents Association conference themed ?Tourism: Responding to a Turbulent Economy and Changing Climate? in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, with a presentation of Sri Lanka?s Earth Lung project by the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Promotions Bureau, Renton de Alwis. Also invited to the event is Sri Lanka?s Tourism Ambassador Alston Koch who will render the song ?Land Like No Other?, the song on climate change and tourism which is now gaining recognition as the official climate change and tourism song with support from the UN WTO.

According to UNWTO sources Egypt may be the second country to join the Tourism Earth Lung Community, the extension of Sri Lanka?s pioneering initiative of the Tourism Earth Lung.

Jazeera Airways partners with Favourite Holidays

Jazeera Airways, the premier low cost airline of Kuwait, have appointed Favourite Holidays (Pvt) Ltd as their Sales Agent with effect from November 20th 2008.

The Airline which was formed in 2005, is one of the worlds leading low cost Airlines with a fleet of brand new Airbus A320s, flying to the Middle East?s most popular destinations for both business and leisure.

To ensure the comfort of Chinese speaking passengers, SriLankan Airlines have gone the extra ?mile? and have engaged the services of flight attendants with Chinese language skills.

With a Chinese speaking flight attendant on board each flight on the Colombo Beijing sector, SriLankan Airlines will maintain their international award winning image of a caring, friendly and warm service overcoming language barriers.

The Chinese Passenger Assistants, all of whom have prior experience in the travel industry, will also serve at ground level at the Bandaranaike International Airport including passengers in transit. SriLankan flies thrice weekly to Beijing from Colombo, via Bangkok, on Sunday, Wednesday and Friday.

JBIC pledges USD 30 million for Tourism projects

The Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) recognizing the importance of the Tourism sector in Sri Lanka is to provide US $ 30 million for several tourism related projects.

According to George Michael, Seceretary Ministry of Tourism JBIC identified projects include the heritage museum and interpretation centre at Sigiriya, cleaning of Lake Gregory in Nuwara Eliya, Dutch Canal in Negombo and several township developments of places of tourist interest.

Maldivian commenced flights to Colombo

Maldivian, the airline division of Island Aviation Services of the Maldives commenced scheduled operations to Colombo this week. Initially it will be evening flights on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Passengers flying Maldivian will enjoy free lounge facilities at the ?Palm Strip Lounge? in Colombo and the ?Finifenmaa? Lounge in Male. The airline will also provide four connections within Maldives.
