Hikkaduwa Beach Fest 2008 exceeds all expectations

?Is this Sri Lanka ? amazing ! Beautiful, beautiful people, smiling all the time. Lovely, lovely? Hikkaduwa beach, so much of sun and so much fun. I am so happy to be here at this festival? a beaming Lisa Littlewood, the renowned female DJ from Scotland said, walking the sand of Hikkaduwa.

Five days of non ? stop fun in the sun, during the day and dancing from sunset to sunrise, made Hikkaduwa Beach Fest 2008, be Asia?s best beach carnival, an event which took firm roots in the region?s tourism calendar of exciting and entertaining events.

According to research conducted of the social impact of the event, a massive Rs. 130 million is the direct economic contribution to Hikkaduwa's community within the five day event. After almost 20 years all accommodation was full in Hikkaduwa and the impact overflowed to Galle, Ahungalla and Bentota areas as well. The benefits were as widespread involving street and beach vendors, glass bottom boat operators, guest house owners, hoteliers and those providing rooms in homes.

Tourism newest ambassador captivates audiences

Sri Lankan born musician of international acclaim, Alston Koch, was appointed an Ambassador for Tourism, by Tourism Minister Milinda Moragoda this week in Colombo.

With three Gold Records and 18 International Releases including musical videos and the now famous Murali Song to his credit; Alston is also the recipient of three ARIA (Australian Record Industry Award) awards. In Sri Lanka to perform at the immensely successful ?Hikkaduwa Fest ?08? and at the ?SAARC Head of States Summit Media Event? hosted by Sri Lanka Tourism, Alston enthralled South Asian Media and Sri Lankan audiences with the Murali Song, singing against a backdrop of Cricket videos. His other popular songs ?Disco Lady', 'Try Again' and 'Twenty Miles? were also received with thundering applause, by an appreciative audience.

A keen environmentalist, Alston has ventured to compose and present a special song for Sri Lanka Tourism?s Earth Lung Project, establishing the destination?s efforts at mitigating Climate change. The song titled ?A Land Like No Other? was first sung at the SAARC media dinner show held at the Trans Asia hotel, Colombo, last week, to the applause of an appreciative audience.

The Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management which is the training ground for all cadres to the hospitality industry hosted visiting delegates, observer visitors and media on tour, to a treat of Sri Lankan culinary delights at the SLITHM premises last Friday.

Delighted delegates and spouses paid tribute to the variety of foods served and were full of praise for the training school faculty for the quality of excellent service provided by the students in attendance. The SLITHM alumni are a pride to Sri Lanka?s human resource pool and over the years, produced some of the best hoteliers in Asia.

The Ramon Magsaysay Award has recognised over a period of 50 years, over 250 of Asia?s inspiring and successful leaders, whose tireless work has contributed to the well being of fellow men.

This year among the awardees is Ananda Galappatti, from Sri Lanka, who receives the award for Emergent Leadership. The Board of Trustees of the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation (RMAF) have cited Galappatti as having been nominated for the award for ?His spirited personal commitment to bring appropriate and effective psychosocial services to victims of war trauma and natural disasters in Sri Lanka.?

Seven individuals and one organization from India, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, Thailand, and Sri Lanka will receive Asia's premier prize, the Ramon Magsaysay Award on August 31st at the Main Theatre Cultural Centre of the Philippines.

In the on going Test series against Sri Lanka, the visitors evened scores by winning the 2nd Test played in the southern coastal town of Galle. The 3rd and final Test will be played at the P Sara Stadium in Colombo on Friday the 8th August.

Asia most magnificent pageant beckons

The Esala Perahera, a celebration of religion and culture which reflects the rich tradition and history of the island nation will parade the streets of Kandy in the north central province this month. Many visitors, including TV channel hosts and camera crew, will be in the hill capital to capture this annual historical event for a wider international audience.

This centuries old ritual; a grand procession, goes as far back as the 3rd century B.C. Originally enacted to appease the God?s and as a prayerful ritual; a request for rain and freedom from drought, it has expanded to be the current magnificent pageant in veneration of the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha, believed to have been brought to Sri Lanka from India in the 4th century A.D.

Horse racing in Nuwara Eliya

Sri Lanka Turf Club organized Horse Racing will entertain visitors to Nuwara Eliya on two consecutive Sundays in August; on the 10th and 17th from 10 a.m. onwards. The Nuwara Eliya Race Course, will be the venue to Sri Lanka Turf Club organized Horse Race Meets on the 10th where 20 thoroughbreds will vie for the trophies on offer.

The ?Sports? Minister?s Trophy? is on the 10th while the Brown & Co Ltd sponsored event is on the 17th and will feature six races: ? Browns Cup?, ? Browns Tours Cup?, ?Havells Cup? ,?Exide Cup?, ? Olympus Cup? and the ?Sharp Cup?.

In addition to experiencing the thrill of racing, there will also be other interesting diversions - a fashion show and a show of fashion by attendees; which will attract a variety of prizes; ?Best Dressed Lady? , ?Best Dressed Gent? and ?Photogenic Personality?.
