Train Travel,

Sri Lanka.

Train travel, while slower, is more comfortable.

The trains are the most cheapest, safe and enjoyable traveling method in Sri Lanka. From the Pettah railway station which is the central railway station travelers can take their trains to different destinations. You can take trains to most of the important places in the island. Badulla, Colombo Fort, Kandy, Maradana, MataraPolonnaruwa, Trincomalee and Vavunia are various cities connected by the railways.

Trains link the major cities and have several classes:

» 1st class sleeper. 1st class sleeping-berths are available on a few overnight trains.

» 1st class observation car. Available on the best daytime trains on the scenic route from Colombo to Kandy and Badulla. The observation car is normally at the rear of the train (or sometimes behind the locomotive) and has comfortable (if slightly grubby...) armchairs facing a large window looking back along the track. Seats must be reserved before departure. The 1st class observation car is highly recommended.

» 1st class air-conditioned seats car. Only available on one or two trains.

» 2nd class seats, available on all trains. These come in several versions, depending on the train:
(1) unreserved seats, where you buy a ticket, hop on and sit in any available seat,
(2) reserved seats where you must make a reservation and you get an allocated seat,
(3) reserved 'sleeperette' reclining seats which are available on most overnight trains. 2nd class seats are the recommended option on trains with no 1st class.

» 3rd class seats, available on most trains. These come in several versions, depending on the train: unreserved seats, reserved seats, and reserved 'sleeperette' reclining seats. 3rd class is very basic and gets very crowded, and it is not generally recommended for visitors.

Some people may joke that train travel in Sri Lanka is for people with little money and lots of time, but for tourists it is a wonderfully appealing mode of travel, especially in the island?s highlands where the scenery can be breathtaking at times. The downside is that for some routes the train can be slower than a car and delays are common.

Hill-country observatory carriage

There is a special first-class observatory carriage on the Colombo to Dambulla hill-country train. This is the last carriage on the train which has a full window to maximize the views. Tickets need to be booked at least 10 days in advance. Note that availability can be limited during national holidays.
» First or second class
First or second class

The main advantage of traveling in the first class carriage ? not available on the south coast route ? is that you can book in advance and be guaranteed a seat. However, as long as you avoid the peak commuter trains in the morning and evening, second class travel is also enjoyed by many, although you have to be prepared for some jostling on the station platform.

The railway network, which began operating in 1864, comprises nine lines radiating from Colombo, the most beautiful of which runs deep into the hills, traveling via Kandy and Nuwara Eliya before terminating in Badulla. This journey offers spectacular hill-country views as the train winds its way past gushing waterfalls and through neatly-clipped tea estates. There is also a useful train line for tourists traveling along the south coast from Colombo to Matara which stops in Bentota and Galle. There is also a train to Trincomalee, which travels through the Cultural Triangle, but traveling by car is preferable in terms of comfort and time.
